- Participation in the competition is free of charge. No purchase or payment of any kind is required to enter.
- These Official Competition Rules ("the Rules") govern all aspects of the competition. By submitting an entry, entrants agree to be bound by these Rules in their entirety.
- These Rules are published in English. In the event of any conflict or ambiguity, the English language version shall prevail.
Article 2: Eligibility
- The competition is open to individuals who, at the time of submission:
- are aged 18 to 30 years (inclusive);
- are a citizen of a European Union member state; and

- Members of the jury;
- Any individual directly involved in the organisation, promotion, or administration of the competition;

- Environmental Defense Fund Europe reserves the right to verify the eligibility of any entrant at any stage of the competition and to disqualify any entry that does not comply with these Rules.
- By submitting an entry, entrants confirm that they meet all eligibility requirements. Any misrepresentation of eligibility will result in immediate disqualification and, where a prize has been awarded, the return of that prize.
Article 3: Entry Period

- The competition closes for entries at 23:59 CET on 14 June 2026 ("the Closing Date"). Entries received after this time and date will not be considered under any circumstances.

- Each entrant acknowledges and agrees that they shall bear sole and exclusive responsibility for any and all claims, liabilities, damages, or disputes arising out of or in connection with the improper use of AI tools, including but not limited to any infringement of intellectual property rights or any other applicable legal obligations.

- The following jurisdiction-specific notes apply to entrants resident in the named countries:
- Italy: The CH₄rt Competition is an artistic contest awarding a prize for the production of an original creative work. Environmental Defense Fund Europe's position is that the competition qualifies for the exemption from Presidential Decree 430/2001 (DPR 430/2001) available to artistic, literary, and scientific contests whose purpose is the production of creative or intellectual works. In addition, if Environmental Defense Fund Europe is established in an EU member state other than Italy, it may apply its local laws rather than DPR 430/2001. If neither exemption applies, Environmental Defense Fund Europe will take the steps necessary to comply with DPR 430/2001 before the competition is promoted in Italy, which may include filing with the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) via the PREMA system at least 15 days before the Opening Date.
- Spain: CH₄rt is a skill-based competition judged by an independent panel. It is not subject to Spanish gambling tax (Impuesto sobre actividades de juego), which applies to state lottery and betting products and not to skill-based art competitions. The cash prize is treated as a capital gain under Spanish personal income tax law and must be declared by the winner in their annual tax return. Environmental Defense Fund Europe has no withholding obligation in Spain for this type of competition at this prize value.
- Germany: CH₄rt is a skill-based competition and falls outside the scope of the German Interstate Treaty on Gambling (Glücksspielstaatsvertrag). The German Act against Unfair Competition (UWG) applies and its transparency requirements are satisfied by these Rules. No registration, filing, or notarial presence is required.
Article 8: Intellectual Property & Rights
- Entrants retain full copyright and moral rights in their submitted works at all times.
- By submitting an entry, each entrant grants Environmental Defense Fund Europe a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to reproduce, publish, display, and communicate their submitted work for the purposes of promoting the competition, exhibiting the work, and publishing it on Environmental Defense Fund Europe's channels with full artist credit.
- The non-exclusive licence granted in Article 8.2 in respect of non-winning shortlisted entries shall expire on the earlier of: (a) three years from the date of the public announcement of the shortlist; or (b) the conclusion of the Time for CH₄nge campaign. Following expiry, Environmental Defense Fund Europe will remove shortlisted works from its active digital channels upon written request from the entrant.
- The overall winner, MEP Prize winner, and runners-up grant Environmental Defense Fund Europe an additional non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to use their submitted artwork across Environmental Defense Fund Europe's communications and advocacy materials, which licence shall expire on the earlier of: (a) three years from the date of the public announcement of the shortlist; or (b) the conclusion of the Time for CH₄nge campaign. Notwithstanding the foregoing, this licence is subject to renewal by mutual written agreement.
- Environmental Defense Fund Europe will always credit the artist by name when publishing or displaying their work in primary campaign contexts.
- Entrants warrant that their submitted work is wholly original, does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party, and does not include any unlicensed third-party material. Entrants assume full legal responsibility for any third-party claims arising from their submission, including in relation to any AI-generated elements.

- The overall winner, MEP Prize winner, runners-up, and shortlisted finalists will be notified by email prior to the public announcement. - The overall winner, MEP Prize winner, and runners-up may be required to provide proof of identity and eligibility before the prize is awarded.
