CH₄rt 2026 | Summary of binding terms
The Terms and Conditions of the CH₄rt 2026 Competition are set out in full in the Official Competition Rules. By submitting an entry, you agree to be bound by those Rules in their entirety. The summary below highlights the key points; the Rules remain the authoritative legal version.
Organiser
Stichting Environmental Defense Fund International ("Environmental Defense Fund Europe"), registered at Joop Geesinkweg 501, 1114 AB Amsterdam-Duivendrecht, the Netherlands, Dutch Chamber of Commerce number 72607440. Contact: Tamsin Weatherly (tweatherly@edf.org).
Eligibility
- Open to individuals aged 18 to 30 (inclusive) at the time of submission.
- Entrants must be citizens of a European Union member state.
- Entrants must be the sole and original author of the submitted work.
- Employees, officers, directors and immediate family of Environmental Defense Fund Europe or Fourtold Belgium SRL, members of the jury, and anyone involved in running the competition are not eligible.

Entry
- Entries open at 09:00 CET on 22 April 2026 and close at 23:59 CET on 14 June 2026.
- Participation is free. No purchase or payment is required to enter.
- One entry per person. Multiple entries will result in all of that individual's entries being disqualified.
- Entries must be original 2D artworks responding to the brief Make methane visible, submitted as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or EPS, at a minimum of 3000px on the shortest side or 300dpi.
- Entries cannot be edited once submitted.
- Use of AI tools must be disclosed at the time of submission; works generated entirely by AI are ineligible.
Judging & Prizes
- Entries are assessed in two stages: pre-shortlisting by Environmental Defense Fund Europe and Fourtold, followed by jury review and deliberation.
- Judging criteria (each weighted 25%): Artistic quality, Conceptual strength, Communicative power, Originality.
- Prizes: €1,000 overall winner + €1,000 MEP Prize winner + 2 × €500 runners-up. Total cash prize fund of €3,000.
- The jury's decision is final and binding.
Intellectual Property
- You retain full copyright and moral rights in your artwork at all times.
- By entering, you grant Environmental Defense Fund Europe a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to reproduce, publish, display, and communicate your work for competition and campaign purposes, always with full artist credit.
- This licence expires at the earlier of three years from the shortlist announcement or the conclusion of the Time for CH₄nge campaign. Following expiry, Environmental Defense Fund Europe will remove shortlisted works from its active digital channels upon written request.
- You warrant that your work is wholly original and does not infringe any third party's rights, including in relation to any AI-generated elements.
Personal Data
Fourtold is the data controller for personal data collected in connection with the competition. Environmental Defense Fund Europe acts as data processor under a Data Processing Agreement. See our Privacy Notice for full details, including your rights and how to exercise them.
Disqualification & Cancellation
Environmental Defense Fund Europe reserves the right to disqualify any entry or entrant that breaches these Rules, misrepresents their eligibility, submits offensive or unlawful content, infringes third-party rights, or attempts to manipulate the competition process. Environmental Defense Fund Europe also reserves the right to cancel, suspend, or modify the competition in circumstances beyond its reasonable control.
Governing Law
These Rules are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. Any dispute arising from or in connection with the competition shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the Netherlands.
Social Media
The competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed, or administered by, or associated with, any social media platform including Instagram or LinkedIn. Questions or complaints should be directed to Environmental Defense Fund Europe at europe@edf.org and not to any social media platform.
